Extended Summary
Personality is a phenomenon that occurs under the influence of many factors and affects an individual’s choices in life. Individuals can develop and change with their inherited personality traits, the environment they live in, their family and the opportunities they encounter. Vocation factor is among the factors affecting personality such as heredity, socio-cultural factors, family, geographical and physical factors and social structure factor.
Vocation takes a large part of an individual’s life. Considering that individuals often spend more time in their vocational environment than their families, it is concluded that it is not possible to ignore individual and vocation interaction. There is an interaction between the vocation and the person performing the profession, both in terms of the time spent and the vocation of the individuals.
This study was conducted in order to explain the framework and dimensions of the concept of “vocation-member exchange (V-M-X)”, which expresses the effects and mutual interaction of people who perform professions in the context of primary school teachers, soldiers and intensive care nurses. There are four sub-dimensions of the vocation-member exchange (V-M-X): “reputation”, “spiritual satisfaction”, “self-sacrifice” and “unlimited shift”.
The reputation dimension refers to the respect developed by the society towards those who perform the profession. Spiritual satisfaction dimension; It can be expressed as a value that enables the people who perform the profession to continue without quitting despite their difficulties. Reputation and spiritual satisfaction are seen as the value that the vocation adds to the member.
The self-sacrifice dimension refers to the extras that the member thinks should be done with the entry into the profession, although it is not included in the employment contract. The unlimited shift dimension is a dimension that expresses that the member should organize his social life according to the work of his vocation when it is necessary, even though there is a working order in the vocational system, and it often becomes the focal point of his life. In vocation-member exchange, self-sacrifice and unlimited shift dimensions are seen as the value that members add to the vocation.
